NEW ENGINE SHED

Unlike the lottery funded project, the new shed is being funded solely by the Museum and the labour provided by the railway volunteers. Work on the loco shed was halted while the big exhibition building was constructed but now that has been opened we turned our attention back to the loco shed.

The concrete floor incorporating three roads was laid in 2003 but apart from erection of the support columns, nothing else was done - until around August 2004 that is. Since then a lot has happened.

Early August and the side beams for the frame were lifted into position using the Museum's antiquated crane.

This was followed by the roof trusses - one of which we had to fabricate from scratch.

The frame was soon up - almost all of it was done on the same sweltering hot August day.

There was a delay while the cladding was obtained and it was not until the beginning of October that we were able to complete this task. A complete week was spent on the job of fixing the cladding. This is made of modern plastic coated materials but to the traditional corrugated iron profile.

The final result. The new engine shed is virtually finished with final fitting out - electrics, power tools etc - now being completed.
Trackwork into the building has also been completed. We shall be able to use it from the beginning of the season - we open mid March.

Although the shed is outside the normal public areas of the Museum, it is planned that conducted "tours" of the shed will be provided for visitors to see the locos which will be kept in it.

See you there.
